Hat Photography, addressing the challenges of lockdown - Stand Up!

Anjee and I have been so fortunate to photograph some stunning hats and meet some wonderful milliners over the last few years.

We are passionate about helping this community where we can by merging our skill set with the milliner.

However these are challenging times with budgets dramatically squeezed and social distancing reducing our options in terms of model shoots.

But in adversity creativity tends to kick in and we are a member of this millinery community so that means we bring ideas to help.

We would like to announce something that we plan to launch very soon called 'Stand Up.'

We will offer any milliner, anywhere in the world an option to have their hats (up to 5) shot on our headstands, beautifully lit and composed.These can be sent to us via courier.

As a guide price we are thinking of £25 per hat excl return delivery costs. Each hat will be photographed at multiple angles. We will maintain our quality standards because that is what our reputation is based on and is not something we are prepared to compromise.

This will hopefully enable milliners to have well lit and composed photographs so they can maintain their market presence.

We regularly get asked to do photographs from milliners who are not based near us in the UK.

We wanted to see if there is a way we can deliver our photography to milliners wherever they are in the world.

Well we have managed to crack it and have done shoots for the likes of Donna Hartley who is based in Spain.

So how does it work?

We have an initial discovery call over WhatsApp or whatever platform you prefer. This allows you to explain what you want to achieve.
You get to chose from a selection of models that we are familiar with.
We set a date.
You arrange courier and pick up of hats.
We look after your hats (we are a pet free, smoke free home and frankly Anjee treats them like they are her children!!)
The day of the shoot arrives. You are linked in via video so you can view the hats but also ensure they are sat right.
Through a secure web link as the photos are taken they are sent direct to your device wherever you are in the world, as long as you have wifi, 4G etc.
Hats are picked up and returned to you via your courier.
We edit the hat images so they are ready for you to use.
We manage the whole event for you.

Millinery Photography - International

Anjee and I are pleased to announce that we can now shoot hats couriered to us from any part of the world.

We have recently done two shoots for Donna and Joanne at Donna Hartley Millinery, who are based in Spain. You can see examples of what we did in our albums.

Their hats were delivered and picked up by their courier, removing travel costs for them.

During the shoot we used FaceTime so they could see the how the hats were sat on our model’s head.

Using a private online gallery, when the photographs were taken they were instantly synced to their iPad in Spain for review enabling constant feedback.

If you are not based near us that is no longer a problem and is probably more cost effective for you. We manage everything at The Portrait Kitchen; the photography, the lighting, image editing, the models, make up, styling as well as looking after your hats (we live in a pet and smoke free home).

The Portrait Kitchen (for milliners)

Hi everyone

My wife and I have now set up The Portrait Kitchen http://portraitkitchen.co.uk/ from our base in the Midlands, UK and we are interested in engaging with milliners.

The main reason was that we had this nice space in our kitchen and it suits millinery very well as we hope to convey via our site.

We have models and MUA's available.

A common problem I noticed when I offered my portraiture before was location. So here is a way to solve that.

Lets say you are based in LA or Paris. Not that easy for you to get to us?! We wanted to crack that problem. How I shoot can do that. As I take an image it syncs securely and privately into the Adobe Creative Cloud in real time. You can receive those images pretty much immediately in an app that sits on your iPad/smartphone/desktop. You could even hook up via say FaceTime so you can be commenting on the images as they happen, from the comfort of your own home.

Hats can be sent and returned via an insured courier because we understand that this is your art and should be respected accordingly. We operate in a smoke free environment.

The photographer, the milliner, his portraits and their hats.

Hi everyone

My name is Jon Busby and I am a professional portrait photographer, www.jcbusby.com

I have been thinking for awhile now about specialising in millinery portraits that help milliners showcase their work. The idea came from a model I was working with who felt my uncluttered, minimal style would suit hats. Although I haven't done many hat specific shots yet I have attached portraits I have done where my models have worn hats.

Having researched the market the difference in a well composed and well lit hat placed on a model, I think, can be defining and can bring out so much character than say a hat on a stand. Cropping in closely with zero or little background 'clutter' enables the eye to be naturally drawn to the hat. Make the composition full length and there are other things to look at which takes the eye away from the hat. It is similar if there is some background distraction. As a photographer the focus should be on the hat first, complimented by a good model.

So I would like to make an offer to the Hat Academy community. I would like to offer three miliners my time for free in a professional studio where we can work together to create amazing images of your work that you can then use to promote yourself.

I am based near Birmingham UK and have access to two wonderfully spacious professional studios. I also have a bank of male and female models who will sit for free (assuming availability) for the images. Typically these models would require copies of approved images to add to their portfolios as a 'trade for' payment. I tend to use more mature models as they bring a sense of experience and realism although I also have access to younger models.

I will also provide you with access to a private web based gallery after our shoot for you to access and review the work. From that you may select up to 15 images, (in reality I usually offer more but wanted to put a mimnimum number). I will do post process and retouch so they are super sharp and clean. I will also make them Instagram etc friendly. BTW the gallery means you get every shot taken of your hats.

The only charge that I will make is for the studio hire as this is a fixed cost that I have to pay the owners. Typically this is weekdays £15/hour, weekends £20/hour. I take no cut from this and in the interests of being transparent you can make payment direct to them if you prefer.

As a guide I would say that as a minimum 2 hours and a maximum of 4-5 hours.

What's in it for me? I get the chance to establish myself in a niche that I am interested in and work with people who have a creative passion.

If you are not one of the 3 selected I would like to make a secondary offer exclusively to The Hat Academy. Below are my discounted charges for The Hat Academy members excluding studio costs but including the 15 post process images.

2 hour shoot for £120

3 hour shoot for £150

4 hour shoot for £180.

If you want to work with another milliner at the studio to split costs that is okay but from a purely organisational point of view I'd say two would be the limit.

I can hire in studios in other parts of the UK however that may impact on costs around travel.

I can and do do outdoor/location shoots but initially would prefer to utilise studio light as it is far easier to control.
