Felt hat old looking

Hi all, I’m going thru different techniques to make new felt hats look older, but somehow I saw a hat that is using I suppose oil or something similar in black felt, obviously is not burnt due it changes the color, but somehow it looks like shiny and polished?! I don’t really know, does someone knows how to make this look? Thank you

How to give a hat shape/stiffness?

Hello! I am interested in jijin hats, a kind of liturgical hat that was used in China. I'm trying to figure out what material would be used to give this hat its shape/its stiffness? I'd like to be able to recreate one, but I'm not sure what kind of leather/buckram/material would be needed, and if it would have to be glued to the inside of the fabric? I have a background in sewing, but not in millinery, so any information or advice you can give is appreciated! :) Thanks!

Do most hats need a band on the inside?

Hello, I am branching out in my hatmaking and getting more serious about it. I used to just make crochet beanies and fabric scrub caps. Now I am sewing and crocheting cloches. They are my favorite kind of hat. I might also make some fedoras if I can figure out how to sew them.

What I was wondering is if most hats (not beanies of course) should have a band on the inside even if they have a lining. For example, if I sew a wool cloche with a polyester lining (both fabrics upcycled from a mens blazer) should it have a band inside? Does it depend on the fabric of the lining or is it just standard practice to put one in?

If so, what material should the band be made from? Ribbon? Also, is there any way to make that partial or full elastic so my hats can be more 'one size fits all'? Or should I just sew a strip of elastic into the lining?

I eventually want to try felt hats, but I do not have the money to get the block and stuff right now. I think I can make some nice ones by sewing them, but I have noticed there is not a whole lot of info on ths Internet about sewing hats other than tutorials (most of which are for bucket or sun hats, not winter or dressier hats). So, I really appreciate the opportunity to learn from other people who also love making hats.

Heated hat blocks

I brought these from Byron Bay and will eventually get them to Hobart to my millinery studio shop .

I have used one for a day four years ago supervised and 25 year ago at TAFE but still very naive.

. Any advise would be gold to me right now..

PLEASE HELP: How do i, fashion student create a really huge brimed felt hat ?

Hello everyone,

i am a student from Germany and study fashion design. For one of my current courses, i want to create a look including a felt hat, inspired by the illustration u can see below. The small Problem is i have none and my Professor only limited Knowledge of hatmaking, luckily my University has quite a lot of equipment for it.

Now to the question or rather problem, how do i get a really huge and oversized felt brim stiff enough ?

Would be a normal stiffner like shellack or something simmiliar enough that it wont "flop" down? I as well had the idea to include, maybe small hidden wooden or metal rods in the brim is that an option or another idea to hold the brim up ? Or should i maybe choose an entirely differnent material, since felt can be quite heavy ? I really have no idea what i can do so any tipp is welcome :)

How to ship a hat with large feathers

Hello,

I have just finished a custom piece that turned out amazing. Lots of peacock feathers and swords and...now how do I pack this thing?

I'm thinking make poster board (thicker than paper, but not too stiff) paper tubes for the feathers, and lots of tissue and bubble wrap. Additionally, I am considering cutting strips of poster board to lay across the fascinator base and tape them to the bottom of the box so that the thing can't be tipped on its head.

Anyone have advice for safely shipping millinery with long, big or peacock feathers?
